Yesterday I talked a lot about how to avoid being a dunce when you market (take notice of the Ninny’s brother from yesterday’s post). We specifically spoke about how to use different links to track your online marketing so that you know where you’re best traffic is coming from. This gives you massive insight on where to spend your advertising dollars and your time. We don’t live in the caveman times of marketing where you have to guess at how effective your marketing is. We can use strategies that are not hard to implement to be smart marketers.
The next layer to tracking conversions is with scripts or tracking pixels that you place on certain pages in your funnel that will record your “success”.
Now, “success” doesn’t just mean sales – it could also mean optins. It could mean whatever you want the person to do when they hit your page. If a person lands on a page and you have a button that says :
…and they click it – well, that’s a success.
Facebook and other platforms offer something called a tracking pixel. This is a snippet of code that you place on a page that your visitor lands on after they perform your desired action. The code looks like this:
If we are going with the webinar example above, the page we would put this code on is the “Thank You For Registering Page”. Sometimes you have to rig it so there is some kind of page that you control so that you can put this code on the page. So, instead of taking people to a generic page owned by Go To Webinar, for example, you would take them to a page on your website that you control so that you can place this code on the page. By doing this in conjunction with your Facebook Marketing, Facebook will be able to track your conversions and give you even more insight on how you are doing with your campaigns.
Other Conversion Tracking Systems
Besides Facebook tracking pixels, there are other sophisticated conversion tracking systems that you can invest in to help you know where your sales are coming from. Some of these systems require you to have your own dedicated server which could be quite costly.
My main advice to you is to use a tracking system THAT YOU OWN!!!
Avoid paying large sums of money to a third party to track all your links…..this could be disastrous. First of all, once you have a number of links up, you are now practically married to the system and it will be hard to change in the future. And second, heaven forbid, that company goes out of business or experiences a lot of outages – you are going to suffer majorly. It is good practice not to rely heavily on a third party to control your links. You want to own these properties!
The Tracking Mystery
One of the things you might be thinking about is how the heck to track properties you don’t own. Let’s say you are doing an affiliate promotion and you are promoting to your list and you are also running Facebook ads. If you are just using different links, you can see where your clicks are coming from but you won’t be able to see where your sales are coming from because you need the conversion tracking pixels on the download page….that you don’t own!! This is a tough one sometimes and the best solution is to try to establish a relationship with the product owner so that he/she can place that conversion pixel on their download page for you!! This way, you will gain a competitive advantage over other affiliates who are promoting the same offer because YOU will know where your sales are coming from and you can then proceed accordingly!
